This 3 day a week class is designed for children in their last year of preschool before kindergarten.  Based on recommendation of the Head Teacher/Director a child that turns 4 by November 1 of that school year may enroll in this class and continue on to the Pre-k class the following school year.  This class will foster development of self-help, listening, language, problem solving, group participation, creative art, Bible stories and literature.

Your child will learn literacy skills such as upper and lower case letter recognition.  They will work on writing the letters of the alphabet.  They will use critical thinking skills to help make predictions and re-tell stories.  Math activities include size awareness and numeral recognition 1-10, counting to 30, recognizing patterns, learning the days of the week, months, and seasons.  Writing, science, learning centers, art and music will also be a part of the curriculum.

We strive to keep the activities fun, creative and interesting.

Overview

The four/five year old classroom is a place where learning, playing and hands on fun come together to create the optimal learning environment for our students.

Students take part in our daily Circle Time.  During this time students go over many concepts including, days, months, seasons, weather, calendar, and math skills such as counting, shapes, patterning, and even addition.  The Teacher utilizes this time to talk with students about the theme for that day and what they will be doing.

In addition to circle time students will have a daily Alphabet meeting.  During this time students are introduced to the letter of the day, and complete hands on activities and games which help them to learn the letter formation, sound and even words that begin with that letter.

Another time student’s meet at our circle time is for reading.  The Teacher uses picture books, poems, and rhymes to introduce students to early literacy concepts, such as reading from left to right and even identifying author, title, cover and illustrations of books.

Teachers will work with students in small groups during center time.  Teachers work with students on art projects, letter, mathematical and thematic activities.  While teachers are working with groups, the remaining students rotate through classroom centers.  Some are always in place while others change to reflect the time of the year, theme or skill students are working on.

There is a blocks/trains & cars center.  Here students work cooperatively to use their imaginations to freely create towers, cities and roads.

In our classroom reading center students are able to enjoy a book, or explore alphabet activities.

In our dramatic play/home living center students have a variety of tools at their disposal.  They can play store, dress up, house, and superhero.  Here they have the opportunity to utilize their imaginations and creativity.

In our writing center students have an opportunity to practice all of the wonderful writing skills they are learning in the classroom.  Here they can draw pictures, shapes, letters, numbers and words.

In our classroom manipulative center students are able to enjoy puzzles, board games, fine motor activities and more…

Our science center includes many different hands on exploration activities.  For example: growth of plants, magnets, nutrition and categorizing.
